Born in Portsmouth (Hampshire) UK,
following a life-time in sales in both the
UK & Australia, my wife and I returned
'home' in 2008, to follow her dream of
running a Great British Pub.
During our time at the 'Waggon & Horses'
Lymington, I created, wrote and self-
published a series of 9 children's books.
I named the series 'Digger Mole & Friends'.
I am now in my 74th year and have
returned to my Mole character series, with
the aim of taking them to the next level,
ideally with a reputable publishing house.
The stories are a 5-minute read and are written
for 2 – 6 year olds. They feature family values
and the importance of caring, sharing and
looking after each other. They also focus on environmental conservation and preservation.
In many of the stories, The Moles visit real
places and therefore, the series makes a
great educational tool.
The stories feature a mole family, that live
in New Forest, England. Digger Mole, his wife
Molly Mole and their children, Melanie, Dapper
& Dinky, are the main characters, but the reader is introduced to many more of their friends, as the adventures continue.
November 2010... Adare (my wife) & I were running the Waggon & Horses, Public House in Walhampton, Lymington Hampshire (UK).
I was writing a newsletter for the pub and had decided to introduce a fictitious customer in to the newsletter, a sort of spy in the pub, so I could write about some of the customers in a light-hearted fashion. I decided to name this character Digby, a mole in the pub.
The more I thought about about Digby the mole, the more I realised this would be more suited to a children’s book character,
and so on the 5th November 2010, Digger Mole and his family were created.
I set about writing a series of short stories (a 5-minute read for 2 – 6 year olds), with the main character being... Digger Mole.
The first story I wrote was Digger Mole’s Special Christmas, followed by 'Why do Moles live underground' and then, 'Meet Digger Mole and his Family'.
The Waggon & Horses is situated in the New Forest close to the Wightlink Ferry to the Isle of Wight and
also close to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.
I have agreement with both Wightlink and Beaulieu Enterprises for permission to write 3 books covering
Wightlink and the National Motor Museum, and hence the stories 'Skipper Mole visits the Ferry',
'Montagu Mole and the Super Highway' & 'Dapper Mole and the Beaulieu Bus' were created.
By 2011, I had self-published 6 'Mole in the Forest' Books and sales were going well.
In 2012, I added 'Great Great Uncle Arthur Mole sails on RMS Titanic' and
'Digger Mole shows Melanie and Dinky London', thus taking the Moles out of the New Forest.
Throughout the series, I have used a number of different artists for my characters,
Jack Blomfield, followed by Paul Hawthorn, who was the artist who's work features in the current books.
I have also written a story about 'Finkley Mole base' at 'Finkley Down Farm', Andover and the artist
for this book was Paul Mahoney.
With more stories to follow and further growth anticipated through this website, Digger Mole and his
forest friends will be going on all sorts of adventures.
Newly created characters include Freddie Fox, Walter Weasel, and Sammy Stoat.
Digger Mole has also built himself a ‘Time Machine’ so he can end up travelling anywhere and any time.
I hope you enjoy the series of books (8 in total) and look out for more stories / books in 2024!
